Wow! I just stumbled across your exercise in worldbuilding and are impressed. I hope you manage to finish the writeup of the continent one day. In the meantime, I hope you get around to posting more of your maps, I've seen quite a few good ones on the guild, but the sheer amount of effort that went into yours is incredible.

I stumbled across this and was equally as critical as you were when I first read this speech about a year ago. Bravo! This was an excellent analysis and a criticism that, honestly, was refreshing because this speech has made the rounds so many times and has been praised so many times that it's nauseating.

She's still writing, btw. The rest of her blog is actually worth reading, even if she hasn't changed much.

One big difference between Shadowrun and DnD is reaction of players to one specific sentence:

"There is a long tunnel ending with T."

In DnD players go to end of tunnel and decide which way to go.
In shadowrun players starts to panic.

:-D

I tend to use pencils, paper, and a scanner. Then, clean it up in pixelmator (like Photoshop, but only 60 bucks... and better, in my experience).

Though last time I messed with the map, I think I just went ahead and edited it with pixelmator, rather than hand editing.

Very cool. I've been wanting to en-wiki-fy my fantasy campaign for a long time, but I've been wanting to host it on my site but getting root access to do so has been problematic (that and I haven't invested a lot of time in researching it). If I can justify the $5 a month for the private version of the wikispaces I may join you there :) Have you looked at AutoREALM for map making? I used to use it and visually it's nice (not great, but free :) ), but the issue of "scale" came up (though this was 5+ years ago) where I couldn't measure n plot for continent & planet sizes. So I ended up using CorelDraw (bought an older version online for $5.00) and it works great but is more time consuming (have to custom modify my own textures, symbols, etc.).

It is not finished by *any* stretch of the imagination, but this is what is going on in 4E DnD for me:

Yup, like usual, I'm agreeing with you Chaemera :)

4E D&D is like being thrust into Secondlife...anything's possible...if you code it. My last D&D Campaign was heavily invested in immersion into the Forgotten Realms history which was woven into the ongoing official storyline. Having that effectively removed I'm left with the rules...which are good, fast paced, and completely malleable...but with "setting" stripped from any other set of rpg rules the completely malleable remains.

The advantage to the "all crunch and no fluff" attitude of 4E DnD is that it allows the DM's like myself to go "whee!" and start inventing whole new worlds without feeling bad for setting aside a beautiful world like the one presented in Shadowrun. My players can tell you, I have binders and maps dedicated to my home-brew campaign settings.

And to help the players feel invested, they get to weigh in on the campaign world's history. They think of a cool idea, even in the midst of gameplay, I'm not going to tell them "no, not in this world" unless it countermands something already established.

But, yes, I do mourn the passing of the core fluff books (they published core books for Forgotten Realms, Eberron and Dark Sun, but not much more than that). The game is worse without the option of a solid, well rounded "official" world.
